A two-time Asian Games gold medallist and Asian champion, four-time national champion, Olympian and former Asian record holder, Indian shot putter Tajinderpal Singh Toor has had an illustrious career.
Tajinderpal Singh Toor scored a try of 21.49m, a new national record in the men’s shot put, at the 4th Indian Grand Prix in 2021, to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. The 21.49 throw also broke the 12-year-old Asian record of 21.13m, set by Saudi Arabia’s Sultan Abdulmajeed Al-Hebshi.
The Punjab athlete has since improved the mark to 21.77m, achieved at the 2023 nationals in Bhubaneswar. Toor held the Asian record until June 2024, when he was overtaken by Saudi Arabia’s Mohammed Dauda Tolo at a track meet in Madrid.
Born on November 13, 1994, in a farming family in Khosa Pando village in Punjab, Tajinderpal Singh Toor’s love for sports was due to the influence of his father Karam Singh and uncle Gurdev Singh. Tajinderpal Singh Toor enjoyed the best moment of his young career at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, throwing 20.75 metres, a new national and Asian Games record, to win the gold medal.
The same day he returned home, Tajinderpal received the sad news that his father had died of cancer. This did not encourage him to realize the final dream – participation in the Olympic Games.
In 2019, Tajinderpal Singh Toor won the gold medal in the Asian championship, then this year set a new national record of 20.92 million to win its first national title. After the 2020 season was shortened due to COVID-19, Tajinderpal recorded shot put distances of 19.49 meters and 20.09 meters in two Indian Grand Prix events, both of which were long enough to win the title, and won with a distance of 20.58 meters in the Fed Cup.
At the 4th Indian Grand Prix in 2021, Tajinderpal Singh Toor threw 21.49 meters in the men’s shot put, setting new Asian and national records. The launch was also qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics -summer debut.
However, Tajin Depal injured his wrist during the Tokyo Olympics and did not achieve the final, but finished 13th in general classification. Tajinderpal was also selected for the team for the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, in July, but had to withdraw at the 11th hour after suffering a groin injury in training.
Tajinderpal returned to competition in September and continued to win medals at international and national competitions. These include gold medals at the 2023 Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships in Bangkok, Thailand, and the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, People’s Republic of China.
