Richard Goodall, a 55-year-old janitor from Terre Haute, Indiana, captured the nation’s heart by winning Season 19 of “America’s Got Talent” (AGT) in 2024. His journey from school custodian to AGT champion is a testament to the power of perseverance and talent.

 

Goodall’s passion for singing was well-known among students and staff at Davis Park Elementary School, where he worked for 23 years. In 2022, a video of him performing Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin'” for students went viral, garnering widespread attention and praise.

 

Encouraged by his wife, Angie Vanoven, Goodall auditioned for AGT in 2024. His rendition of “Don’t Stop Believin'” during the auditions earned him a Golden Buzzer from judge Heidi Klum, propelling him directly to the live shows. Throughout the competition, he delivered powerful performances of songs like Michael Bolton’s “How Am I Supposed to Live Without You” and Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger,” consistently impressing both judges and audiences.

 

In the finale, Goodall performed “Faithfully” by Journey and later shared the stage with the band itself, singing “Don’t Stop Believin’.” His victory not only earned him the $1 million prize but also fulfilled a lifelong dream. Reflecting on his win, Goodall expressed optimism about his future, stating, “Sky’s the limit.” Despite his newfound fame, he plans to return to his janitorial work for a while, demonstrating his humility and dedication to his community.
