Max offers bizarre Mario Kart idea for new F1 rules

In light of the new 2026 Formula 1 technical regulations, Max Verstappen has jokingly asked if they could include “bananas” similar to those in Mario Kart.

Along with the power unit restrictions, which have been in place since 2022, the FIA released the much anticipated chassis specifications for the 2026 season on Thursday.

The primary conclusions are that the new vehicles will have stronger electrical systems, active aerodynamics, and a new Manuel Override Mode (MOM) that will essentially replace DRS.

Before the Canadian Grand Prix, Verstappen offered his initial thoughts on the new regulations, joking that perhaps some of the game’s barriers would also be useful.

Verstappen told the media, including RacingNews365, “What they have done is change a bit how you use the energy on the straights, and the more simulations that are run, everyone will get a better understanding.”

“The primary goal of active aerodynamics is to try and avoid the problem of downshifting on straightaways, but if it is something that can be handled, I suppose it applies to everyone equally.

The effectiveness of the Manuel Override Mode is unknown to me as I haven’t had a chance to observe it in action.

“Maybe you need some bananas…”

Verstappen also advised being cautious regarding the new driver-activated boost and its effects, reasoning that the regulations would become clearer as more research was conducted into them.

“If it functions well, it functions well, but right now I find it a little challenging to pinpoint because it will depend largely on how well you can follow up with how strong the boost is and how slowly the recharge mode moves.

“There are many things that I still need to fully comprehend; everyone is involved in creating or assembling the regulations, not just me. Although it is undoubtedly more difficult, everything will nevertheless function properly.”
