Newcastle closing in on an agreement to capture 21-year-old Englishman

According to Sky Sports’ Keith Downie, Newcastle United is moving closer to signing James Trafford, and as long as negotiations continue, the club will strike an agreement with Burnley.

Eddie Howe has identified Trafford as a potential contender in his search for a new goalkeeper who can act as Nick Pope’s reliable backup.

The Magpies and Valencia talked Giorgi Mamardashvili, but it quickly became clear that the Georgia international was out of reach.

Following Trafford’s withdrawal from Gareth Southgate’s final England team for the Euros last week, Newcastle has focused on him.

While Downie recognized that the Clarets rejected Newcastle’s initial offer, which was reputedly worth between £15 and £16 million, he believes that the fact that conversations have begun indicates that both parties are confident about reaching an agreement.

Downie made this revelation during the Loaded Mag transfer show.

Lewis Hall, who joined the Magpies on loan from Chelsea last season, has already signed a permanent contract at St James’ Park.

Newcastle are also likely to sign defender Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer. The central defender has agreed to a five-year contract with the Magpies.

The Magpies hope to bolster their goalkeeping options this summer, following Loris Karuis’ departure, the uncertainty surrounding Martin Dubravka’s future, and Pope’s recent recovery from a long-term injury.

Newcastle are anticipated to be active in the market as they look to strengthen their squad and acquire players in all positions.

After an injury problem last season that wrecked their chances of qualifying for Europe, they are keen to improve their squad’s quality and depth.

A new striker and midfielder are also set to join the club this summer, with the Magpies close to completing the acquisition of defender Kelly and making progress on recruiting Trafford to strengthen their goalkeeping department.
