(CNN) — Quincy Wilson, a 16-year-old sprinter, has been selected for the 4×400 meter relay in the next Olympic Games in Paris, making him the youngest male track Olympian in US history.

Wilson shared the news on Instagram on Sunday, writing: “WE GOING TO THE OLYMPICS,” along with numerous posts claiming that he had made the team.

Wilson’s coach, Joe Lee, verified the story to the Washington Post and USA Today.

“The call came directly from USA Track & Field,” Lee told USA Today. “I called Quincy afterwards with the good news.”

USA Track & Field denied to confirm the news with CNN, stating that the whole squad roster, including the relay pool, will be published on July 8.

Wilson’s selection follows a spectacular debut at the US Olympic Trials last week, when he twice smashed the 400m world record.

Despite failing to qualify for the 400m final and finishing sixth, Wilson set an under-18 world mark of 44.59 seconds in the semifinals on Sunday, two days after breaking it with a time of 44.66.

“I don’t know if my season is over yet, and I don’t want to go eat ice cream too soon,” Wilson said after the 400m race, before learning he had made the relay pool.

Wilson, who was born in 2008, has swiftly established himself as one of track and field’s most promising young athletes.

The sprinter seemed to break records whenever he runs, and he is now looking forward to the opportunity to establish himself on a global scale.
