Over two months ago, the soccer world changed as soccer icon Alex Morgan announced her retirement just three days before what would be her final game with San Diego Wave FC.

With the announcement, Morgan also shared she was pregnant with her second child and although it wasn’t the way she hoped to end her career during the NWSL regular season, she had a peace about her decision as a professional in hanging up her boots after a 15-year playing career.

“Here in San Diego, I just want to represent this city so proudly and I believe I’ve done that for the last two and a half years,” said Morgan. “To be honest, I was not expecting to finish my career midseason, this came unexpected and at the beginning of 2024, I wanted to end this season going into playoffs and winning a Championship. You have big hopes for your last year, but unfortunately, plans don’t always go the way that you draft them up and I think that for me, it’s just being a forever supporter of this team, this organization, and just being forever embedded into this community here.”

Following her successful career with the U.S. Women’ National Team and with the Wave, Morgan continues to create pathways of equity and opportunity for others in her post retirement journey in the city of San Diego and beyond.
