Red Bull has been urged by Max Verstappen to improve its Formula 1 results after a power unit malfunction in Canada.
Verstappen missed the most of Friday’s second free practice due to a problem with a recently installed hybrid component in his Red Bull-Honda.
If Verstappen exceeds the permitted allocation, the extra MGU-K element supplied to his pool of components could come back to haunt him later in the 2024 season in the form of grid penalties.
In Montreal, Verstappen qualified better than he had anticipated, matching Mercedes polesitter George Russell’s time on a circuit that wasn’t ideal for Red Bull.
However, the three-time world champion has pushed Red Bull to solve its issues immediately because the team is under more pressure from rival teams and has limited room for mistake.
Verstappen addressed the engine problem and remarked, “It was a nice qualifying session, but from our side we’ve had too many issues this weekend.”
“It really shouldn’t take place. As we normally do, we closely monitor everything, but occasionally there are instances when things don’t go as planned and a lot of small issues crop up.”We must work to ensure that it never longer occurs. Canada follows a more challenging Monaco Grand Prix, where Verstappen finished sixth due to his and teammate Sergio Perez’s struggles with the RB20’s handling of bumps and kerbs.
What appeared to be a three-way scrap for the lead between Ferrari and McLaren has suddenly become a four-way contest, with Russell’s pole highlighting Mercedes’ recent development with a noticeable outcome.
“In Q2, Mercedes was three tenths faster than us, but in Q3, we were precisely equal. Because of this, I believe Mercedes still has a lot more to give; they haven’t really demonstrated their greatest lap yet.
Red Bull has struggled in recent weeks to get the setup right on Friday, starting the race badly in Imola and needing to turn things around before qualifying.
Even though the Dutchman was able to overcome some of the handling problems with the RB20, Sergio Perez had another unsatisfactory qualifying session, losing the race in the first round due to a lack of rear grip.
