Why Red Bull purposefully received a grid penalty in order to shield Verstappen

Red Bull breached the rules in an attempt to shield Max Verstappen, and Sergio Perez will start the Spanish Grand Prix with a three-place grid penalty.

Sergio Perez was mistaken if he believed that his weekend at the Canadian Grand Prix could possibly get any worse, as the Red Bull driver will start the following race in Spain with a grid penalty.

The reason was his spin at Turn 6, as he attempted to return to the pit lane by backing the RB20 into a barrier, which damaged the rear wing.

Even while Perez succeeded, the shattered wing’s debris spilled onto the track, endangering the very safety car Red Bull was trying to avoid.
