Los Angeles Lakers are getting closer to a big signing

The Los Angeles Lakers are still the only NBA team that has not signed a free agent yet. With the greatest free agents swiftly leaving the market, the Lakers must act quickly to sign the remaining rotation-caliber players in order to compete in the Western Conference next season.

With D’Angelo Russell opting in and LeBron James signing a huge agreement, the Lakers have little salary space to work with. As a result, they must engage in bargaining or sign-and-trade deals with the remaining free agents. Fortunately for them, the market for one free agent target has dried up, making him more available to the Lakers.

According to Josh Lewenberg of TSN Sports, the Raptors are “prepared to move on from” Gary Trent Jr., allowing the 25-year-old to sign with the Lakers.

Free agent Gary Trent Jr. is now available for the Lakers.

The Los Angeles Lakers’ interest in Trent Jr. was already reported last week. However, there were questions about the Lakers’ ability to afford him, but recent reports indicate that they should be able to.

Trent Jr.’s lack of interest stems from his recent disappointing season in Toronto. Trent averaged 13.7 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game despite shooting only 42.6% from the field. He doesn’t do much more than shoot three-pointers, but given that shooting is the Lakers’ top priority, he’d be a good match with LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
