Newcastle midfielder ruled out for another three matches

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali will miss three more matches before returning to competitive play.

The Italy international has been banned from football since October 2023 for betting crimes, but he has been permitted to train with the Newcastle first team during that time.

Tonali’s suspension expires at the end of August, leaving him available for Newcastle’s home game against Tottenham Hotspur on August 31. If he plays, it will be the 24-year-old’s first appearance on the pitch since October 25th, 2023, when he played 25 minutes against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League group stage.

Even a return date of the 31st is little later than some fans anticipated.

Tonali’s return date is pushed back

Tonali was already scheduled to miss Newcastle’s first two Premier League games of the 2024/25 season, at home against Southampton and away to Bournemouth.

However, it is now obvious that he will also miss their Carabao Cup second-round match, which is planned for the week of August 26th.

Newcastle’s official statement stated that his return date would be August 27. According to the Shields Gazette, the Football Association has set an official return date of August 29th.

The second round of this season’s Carabao Cup is set to take place on August 27th and 28th, dashing Tonali’s ambitions of playing and gaining crucial match practice before returning to Newcastle’s Premier League picture.

The FA document stated, “An 18-month ban imposed by the FIGC for similar [betting] offences to those admitted by [Tonali] in these proceedings.” The prohibition is in place for ten months, from October 27, 2023 to August 29, 2024.
