It’s not often that I share my thoughts on political matters, but this one feels deeply personal to me. As a native German 🇩🇪 who has had the privilege of calling the United States 🇺🇸 home since 2012, I’ve come to understand what patriotism means to Americans and the significance behind their national anthem. For many, the anthem is more than just a song; it’s a symbol of unity, sacrifice, and pride. Over the years, I’ve witnessed how much it represents to the people who call this nation home, particularly those who have served and sacrificed to protect its freedoms. This isn’t a matter of suppressing freedom of speech—something I fully respect and appreciate—it’s about showing respect for the country and the values it stands for. Standing during the national anthem isn’t about agreeing with every decision the government makes or every policy in place. Instead, it’s a simple gesture of honor for the people who’ve put their lives on the line for the nation and for the ideals that the flag represents. No matter where I am in the world, I make it a point to stand during the national anthem of the country I’m in. For me, it’s about respect, not politics. It’s a universal gesture that transcends borders and ideologies, recognizing the sacrifices and histories that have shaped nations. Living in the U.S. has taught me a lot about patriotism, and I’ve grown to appreciate the pride that Americans have for their country. While everyone may approach this issue differently, for me, standing is a simple way of saying “thank you” to those who’ve made sacrifices for the freedoms we enjoy today. It’s a reminder that respect knows no borders. It’s not often that I share my thoughts on political matters, but this one feels deeply personal to me.
