The U.S. Paralympic Track and Field Championships, broadcast live on Peacock and CNBC from Miramar, Florida, starting Thursday, will determine the spots for the Paris team.
A country can qualify up to three athletes per individual sport without exceeding its overall entry limit. According to USA Paralympic Track and Field, the U.S. team has 54 athletes.
Notable athletes competing at the trials include all five of America’s current world champions: Jaedyn Blackwell (T38 100m, 400m), Mikey Brannigan (T20 1500m), Roderick Townsend (T47 high jump), David Blair (F64 discus) and Noelle Malkamaki (F46 shot put).
Blackwell, a 20-year-old from suburban Detroit, can claim to be the first American to win gold in the 100 and 400 meters in any classification at the same Paralympics since Raymond Martin won the 100, 200 , 400 and 800 meters. meters in the T52 category in 2012.
Also announced were seven Americans who won individual gold at the Tokyo Paralympics: Jeremy Campbell (men’s F64 discus), Brianna Clark (women’s T20 400m), Sam Grew (men’s T63 high jump), Nick Mayhew (men’s 100m T38, 400m, men’s long jump). ), Daniel Romanchuk (100, 400 and 800 m T54 men), Susanna Scaroni (400, 800, 1,500 m T54 women) and Townsend, competing in the high and long jump.
Romanchuk and Scaloni have both been on the marathon team before, as has Tatyana McFadden, a 20-time Paralympic medalist and track and field T54 competitor in the 100m, 400m and 800m.
