The New York Jets are going through a pivotal season in which they have lofty expectations they have to meet. Robert Saleh especially needs to make sure the Jets do well in their first full season with Aaron Rodgers or his seat could be getting pretty hot.
The opening game against the San Francisco 49ers didn’t spark much hope. The Jets were consistently beaten in the trenches and Saleh failed to make any adjustments in the game to make sure it could get fixed. It resulted in 180 yards on the ground for the 49ers. Then on offense, it was conservative as three of the five first half drives went run-run-pass, limiting Rodgers and making the offense predictable.
Saleh had no control over his team and failed to recognize that adjustments were needed.
Change is needed as it is clear Saleh is losing his impact on the team and holding them back. The person who could be counted on to correct things would be Troy Aikman
Aikman, who is currently on the ESPN Broadcast team, has had an interest in getting into coaching for quite some time now. The Jets could open the door for him to do so.
Over his playing career with the Dallas Cowboys, Aikman won three Super Bowls, was a six-time Pro Bowler, and had a 94-71 regular season record with an 11-5 postseason record. Concussions forced him to retire before he should’ve stopped playing, but that drive to win would remain the same through the avenue of coaching.
With the Jets, Aikman would be able to provide a spark, and with being a former quarterback, would pick up on necessary adjustments that would be needed in games. Rodgers won’t be around much longer, and with that means a rookie or younger quarterback would take over, and Aikman would be a great mentor for that quarterback to grow under.
The Jets need a spark at the coaching position, and Aikman deserves a chance to further solidify his NFL legacy with the chance to coach. Providing an ideal scenario for both.
