Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer provided updates on several players and position groups during his Tuesday morning appearance on the Gojo and Golic show. Here’s what he shared:
DeBoer is sometimes “in awe” of freshman wide receiver Ryan Williams. He emphasized that people should remember Williams is still a freshman, having reclassified from the 2025 class. Despite his youth, Williams has made the most of his opportunities and has shown his dynamic abilities. DeBoer noted there are moments when Williams’ performance is impressive, especially considering his age and timeline.
Regarding the wider receiving corps, DeBoer mentioned several returning players who have yet to get their chance, highlighting Kendrick Law as a “strong receiver” alongside Kobe Prentice and Emmanuel Henderson. On Germie Bernard, DeBoer said that Bernard has established himself as a valuable teammate and playmaker. Bernard is physical, capable of making plays both in the air and with the ball in his hands.
DeBoer credited receivers coach JaMarcus Shepherd for teaching the receivers the entire position and offensive concepts. According to DeBoer, Shepherd’s approach allows the players to be versatile and understand all parts of the game, rather than being limited to specific roles. This versatility is something both the coaches and players are striving for.
Talking about Jalen Milroe, DeBoer praised Milroe’s discipline and focus, noting that he’s seen significant improvement in Milroe’s execution and understanding of the offense during fall camp. DeBoer appreciated Milroe’s deeper engagement with the game, evidenced by the thoughtful questions he’s been asking.
DeBoer also expressed satisfaction with the offensive line, particularly the interior trio of Tyler Booker, Parker Brailsford, and Jaeden Roberts, who have shown consistency. While the tackle positions have seen some rotation, DeBoer feels confident in their options and is focused on finding the best fit for the group. He praised the offensive linemen for their work ethic, teamwork, and competitiveness.
On defense, DeBoer is enthusiastic about what he’s seeing. He noted more differences between Nick Saban’s and Kane Wommack’s defensive schemes in the secondary than in the front seven. However, the players are adapting well and executing at a high level.
DeBoer highlighted specific defensive players, such as Malachi Moore and Keon Sabb, who bring valuable experience. He expressed confidence in cornerback Domani Jackson and is excited about the growth and hunger of the freshman defensive backs.
In the front seven, DeBoer described Deontae Lawson as a “mainstay” at linebacker and mentioned Tim Smith and Tim Keenan as key interior players. He’s also enthusiastic about LT Overton and Jah-Marien Latham on the edges, noting that others are contributing in specific roles, especially in pass-rushing situations. DeBoer commended these players for their ability to both rush the passer and hold strong against the run.
